To connect to a host named host.example.com with verbose output enabled:

$ mariadb-shell \
   --host host.example.com \
   --user user_name \

   --verbose

To use the short option names, the equivalent command is:

$ mariadb-shell \
   -h host.example.com \
   -u user_name \
   -p 'user_password' \
   -v
