There should be an option to control which type of SQL will be timeout--In our production cases,DDL and some load dml operation should be running longer than select~
You can set this by session, or by user, or by query. It would be quite clunky to add all sorts of query types to that as well, but you can suggest it as a feature on http://jira.mariadb.org/ and see what the response is. I can see that limiting it to SELECT queries only may be useful.
