Is there anyway to do an online non-locking statistics update. Our db can't tolerate more than 3 secs locking on same table.

Implemented for MariaDB-10.2.2 with this change: MDEV-7901.
Not in MariaDB 5.5. In MariaDB 10.0 with the engine independent statistics it is possible.
But in 5.5 the statistical data are chosen in a way to be very stable, they should change very little over time. You don't need to run ANALYZE often, once a month is a ballpark figure, for some applications once might be enough.
