It may be implied but perhaps should be made more explicit: When an "INSERT INTO....ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE" query is used, AUTO_INCREMENT always updates, regardless of whether the record is actually INSERTed or just UPDATEd. This can lead to rapidly escalating index numbers if this approach is used in a long "autosave" web form.
