1. too keep things compatible -> to keep things compatible

2. gunzip < /path-to/mariadb-VERSION-OS.tar.gz | tar xf -

does not work very well. In a brand new Centos 5.5 x64 machine, you will likely encounter the message below: gunzip: /root/mariadb-5.2.4-Linux-x86_64.tar.gz: No such file or directory tar: This does not look like a tar archive tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Instead, tar -xvf /root/mariadb-5.2.4-Linux-x86_64.tar works much better.

I don't see how you can get the described error message from the given command line. It's not clear from your description which command failed (gunzip, tar or both)

Are you sure you didn't miss the '|' or '-' when typing the command?

The given command line is the most portable I know of that should work with all versions of tar.

If you get this again, please past the exact command and error message you got so that we can understand the issue.

You are right Monty, I must have had a typo then, because I used

gunzip < /path-to/mariadb-VERSION-OS.tar.gz | tar xf -

and it worked for me this time. I did copy and paste instead of typing.

How about just tar -zxvpf /root/mariaDB-version.tar.gz ?

That seems to be the best/quickest method, no?
