Cassandra Storage Engine has been released as a part of MariaDB 10.0.1 alpha. It should become mature as MariaDB becomes more mature.
As for "with compact storage" - Cassandra Storage Engine currently uses Thrift API to access Cassandra. I haven't personally tried accessing column families that use "with compact storage" option, but according to Cassandra manual, it should work.
