It is an evolution of [MariaDB 10.0](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/10.0/changes-improvements-in-mariadb-10-0.md) with several entirely new features not found anywhere else and with backported and reimplemented features from MySQL 5.6 and 5.7. Notable changes of this release include: * [Triggers can now be run on the slave](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/standard-replication/running-triggers-on-the-replica-for-row-based-events.md) for row-based events. * [Default roles](/docs/server/reference/sql-statements/account-management-sql-statements/set-default-role.md) allow roles to be enabled automatically when a user connects. * InnoDB: merged the Facebook/Kakao defragmentation patch (see [Defragmenting InnoDB Tablespaces](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/optimization-and-tuning/optimizing-tables/defragmenting-innodb-tablespaces.md)) which uses [OPTIMIZE TABLE](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/optimization-and-tuning/optimizing-tables/optimize-table.md) to defragment InnoDB tablespaces). * [Performance Schema](/docs/server/reference/system-tables/performance-schema.md) tables no longer use `.frm` files. * [Galera](https://mariadb.com/docs/galera-cluster/) is merged into MariaDB server, [MariaDB 10.1.1](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/10.1/10.1.1.md) binaries automatically support Galera out of the box. * InnoDB: report progress of inplace alter table (Kakao patch). * [Statements that exceed a certain execution time](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/optimization-and-tuning/query-optimizations/aborting-statements.md) can now be aborted. * [PREPARE](/docs/server/reference/sql-statements/prepared-statements/prepare-statement.md) statement now supports out parameters. * [Compound statements can be used outside of stored programs](/docs/server/reference/sql-statements/programmatic-compound-statements/using-compound-statements-outside-of-stored-programs.md). * The [engine\_condition\_pushdown optimizer\_switch flag](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/optimization-and-tuning/query-optimizations/optimizer-switch.md) has been deprecated. Engine condition pushdown is now always enabled for all engines that support it. * New Information Schema table [SYSTEM\_VARIABLES](/docs/server/reference/system-tables/information-schema/information-schema-tables/information-schema-system_variables-table.md) shows for every system variable its session and global variable values as well as various metadata. * [Information Schema plugins can now support SHOW and FLUSH statements](https://mariadb.com/docs/general-resources/development-articles/mariadb-internals/information-schema-plugins-show-and-flush-statements). New statements in this release: * [SHOW QUERY\_RESPONSE\_TIME](/docs/server/reference/sql-statements/administrative-sql-statements/show/show-query_response_time.md) * [FLUSH QUERY\_RESPONSE\_TIME](/docs/server/reference/plugins/other-plugins/query-response-time-plugin.md) * [SHOW LOCALES](/docs/server/reference/sql-statements/administrative-sql-statements/show/show-locales.md) * Two new columns added to the [CLIENT\_STATISTICS](/docs/server/reference/system-tables/information-schema/information-schema-tables/information-schema-client_statistics-table.md) and [USER\_STATISTICS](/docs/server/reference/system-tables/information-schema/information-schema-tables/information-schema-user_statistics-table.md) Information Schema tables (`TOTAL_SSL_CONNECTIONS` and `MAX_STATEMENT_TIME_EXCEEDED`). * MariaDB can execute [UNION ALL](/docs/server/reference/sql-statements/data-manipulation/selecting-data/set-operations/union.md) without a temporary table. (MySQL 5.7 patch) * `@@sql_log_slow` is now a session variable, not global. * Merge with [MariaDB 10.0.14](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/10.0/10.0.14.md) * As per the [MariaDB Deprecation Policy](/docs/release-notes/community-server/about/platform-deprecation-policy.md), this will be the last release of [MariaDB 10.1](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/10.1/changes-improvements-in-mariadb-10-1.md) for both Ubuntu 13.10 "Saucy" and Mint 16 "Petra". * With the recent release of CentOS 7 and RHEL 7, we are pleased to now provide packages for both distributions.
