phpmyadmin seems to have problemes with mariadb ( specially mariadb 10) Nobody expects that Mariadb and Oracle Mysql will stay compatible since now ,in particular tools in a short term . Business is Business from both parts Nevertheless Monthy and the mariadb team do produce a good work, but thay have to imagine that to implemant mariadb seriously in small companies,we have to be sure that a whole minimum solution can be installed: (For Linux and Windows) : 1/ a server , 2/ a good specific mariadb admin tools , 3/ mariadb specific drivers (jdbc and odbc) For large companies (they are fewer and fewer) and large Web Sites, the skysql commercial products can be a solution

What problems does phpMyAdmin have with MariaDB 10? Maybe it is confused by the version number?

MariaDB is compatible with MySQL, but if you want to be sure that your GUI fully supports MariaDB, just use one of the GUIs that officially support MariaDB. Here is an incomplete list:
