This is possibly the best explanation on "why" one would use the readconnroute module. When creating a shared nothing cluster (e.g., Galera), the first concern is ACID compliance. That is why I would always use the readwrite splitter.
This article and the great example has given me a provided me a much better understanding on how to create a highly scalable cluster that is ACID compliance.
