When you say clean to you run an optimize table after your purge . Take care this is blocking writes on the table so if huge and not done for long time please plan under maintenance period . If you can not block the table , please use some other type of purge like range partitioning and drop partition that contains data to be purge , or use rolling optimized via tools like replication-manager or cluster control or use toolkit that recreate the table like pt-online-schema-change
