I tried out the option "obfuscate" function instead replace and it works nice with giving same length as the orign but masked. Additional the combination with the firewall filter works very nice as tested.
The only problematic thing is that masking is only possible onto "char" based columns but not on integer (like for ip address) or date fields (like for birthday) and perhaps other interest types:

Sounds like a very useful feature to have.
