I can't see where SPhinxSE was included in Beta 5.3?? Does that sound right? Alan

SphinxSE is in the plugins folder. On my Ubuntu box the location is:

/usr/lib/mysql/plugin/ha_sphinx.so

See the About SphinxSE page for instructions on using INSTALL PLUGIN to perform the one-time install procedure.
