You should consider your workload too and what OS you are using

software raid10 (md) on linux can use many layouts raid10 is nice for big reads/big writes

but for big parallel workload with many threads reading and writing raid1 works better, since it can "handle one thread per disks"

check if changing raid layout could help too, when your memory end, you need the hdd speed to continue with your workload

You need to change only few options. The most important thing is that you reserve enough memory for InnoDB's buffer pool.

Of course if it's a development machine memory is less important and you can also consider disabling some features (storage engines, network capabilities).
