MariaDB Server 10.3 implemented MDEV-11369 instant ADD COLUMN for InnoDB. MDEV-20590 introduced a way to disable this by default, and MDEV-13134 introduced the ALGORITHM clauses NOCOPY and INSTANT for requiring that the operation fail if it can’t be executed as efficiently as requested.

Instant ADD COLUMN was not implemented for ROW_FORMAT=COMPRESSED tables. Could that be the explanation here?

it's all due to the fulltext index in the table
