We are unlikely to backport character sets, but we do plan to release MariaDB 5.5 (based on MySQL 5.5) and those character sets will then be included by default in that release of MariaDB.
ok well, do you have any rough idea of when MariaDB 5.5 might be released?
also, would you consider maybe just backporting utf8mb4? thats really the only character set I'm interested in and I suspect that most anyone else would be interested in as well.
We're hoping to release MariaDB 5.5 later this year. It's dependent on how quickly we can finish and release a stable version of MariaDB 5.3, so I can't be more specific than that at this time.
