Sergei, I don't think you understood the issue here.

The problem isn't that there is a syntax change, or that Maria's team choose whichever syntax over some other syntax. The issue is the way you did it: having one realease using the old syntax and the new realese using the new syntax. No deprecation warnings and no transition releases.

A change like that should be preceded by a deprecation warning over several releaases and most important of all, having AT LEAST one stable version that accepts both syntaxes so admins don't have to do a whole upgrade of all related code and servers in one single step.

AFAIU, my decision to use MariaDB has bought me to the situation where I will have to stop all my systems (sites, internal daemons, etc.) upgrade the code on all of them at once AND upgrade ALL my MariaDB daemons (masters and slaves) and them hope that when I restart everything, I will not have any problems. All this in one move.

Is this really the only wayt to deal with this upgrade, or there is another way that I'm not seeing?
