# What is MariaDB?

MariaDB is a [backwards compatible](https://app.gitbook.com/s/aEnK0ZXmUbJzqQrTjFyb/community-server/about/compatibility-and-differences/mariadb-vs-mysql-compatibility), drop-in replacement of the MySQL® Database Server. It includes all major open source storage engines.
