Where to begin
I should preface this question by letting everyone know my knowledge of databases or more specifically, mariadb is non-existent. I have experiences with SQL and various other languages, though. I've downloaded and unzipped 'mariadb 5.5.26', but I can't seem to find any documentation on how to get started that is directed towards beginners.

Downloading and installing MSI is a better option to start with MariaDB on Windows.
There is a screencast directed towards beginners, that includes first steps (starting with MSI installation)
