The Temporal <data type>s page you found is a chapter from the SQL99 book. That chapter is describing temporal datatypes as defined in the SQL99 standard, not the way things work in MariaDB. The Date and Time Data Types section of the Knowledgebase contains articles on temporal data types in MariaDB.
