Step 3: Connect

Overview

This page details step 3 of a 5-step guided walkthrough to help you get started with SkySQL.

In this step, you will connect to your SkySQL service.

Compatible Clients

Our guided walkthrough uses the MariaDB Client (mariadb), but SkySQL services are compatible with many other clients.

SkySQL Documentation includes client-specific instructions for:

Data-in-Transit Encryption

By default, SkySQL features data-in-transit encryption between the client and the SkySQL service.

TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 are supported.

Connect

Allowlist your IP

SkySQL blocks access to a database service except by allowlisted IP addresses. Addresses can be added at any time after the database service has been created, even while it is still in "Pending" status.

  1. Click on the gear icon to the right of the service listing and click on "Security Access" in the dropdown.

    SkySQL Service IP Allowlist
  2. In the popup window, click on the "Add My IP Address" link to add your public IP address, then click "Done". Alternatively, addresses can be added manually by entering them in the space provided and clicking "Add".

For additional information, see "IP Allowlist for Services".

Choose a Client

You can connect to your SkySQL database service once it moves from "Pending" state to "Healthy" state, and after you allowlist your IP address.

MariaDB SkySQL database services can be accessed from Linux, macOS, and Windows using a range of supported command-line and GUI clients, and connectors for many programming languages.

If you are new to MariaDB Server, we recommend choosing a GUI client like DBeaver (available for macOS and Windows).

Connect

You need a few details for client setup:

  1. On the "Your Services" page, click on the > to the left of the service name to see the "Service Details".

    SkySQL Service Detail view

    Here you will find:

    • Fully Qualified Domain Name (host)

    • Read-Write Port (port)

  2. Once the service is in a "Healthy" state, you can click on "Connect to Service", found to the right of the service name, to view the "Connect to Service" popup with your login credentials.

    SkySQL Show Credentials view

    Here you will find:

    • Default user (user)

    • Default password (password)

    • Certificate authority chain (ssl-ca)

    • Instructions for connecting using MariaDB CLI

  3. You can connect to your SkySQL database service once it moves from "Pending" state to "Healthy" state, and after you allowlist your IP address.
