No joke, the error specifically says "max_allowed_packet_size". I know the system variable is "max_allowed_packet" without the "_size", but the error includes the "_size". Checking the log file, it shows an attempt to set "max_allowed_packet_size" to 4096, and then the next entry is "Quit". I also searched for that string and it shows up in the debug symbols for the ODBC driver itself.
Strange, I see it in the code too, please report this as a bug.
