MariaDB showing version 15.2

Upgraded a test box from 10.11.5 to 11.1.2.
Notice it add 2 new files: server-compat client-compat
And when queried, it's responding with 15.2 instead of the normal MariaDB-10.11.5
Is this the new normal with 11.1.x? Or did a field get changed that needs to be updated?

15.2 is the client version
11.1.X is still the package it came in.
shows
$ mariadb --version mariadb from 11.1.3-MariaDB, client 15.2 for Linux (x86_64) using EditLine wrapper
