[MariaDB 11.3](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/11.3/what-is-mariadb-113.md) is a current development series of MariaDB. It is an evolution of [MariaDB 11.2](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/11.2/what-is-mariadb-112.md) with several entirely new features.
[MariaDB 11.3.0](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/11.3/11.3.0.md) is a single preview release. Features are to be considered preview, and none are guaranteed to make it into [MariaDB 11.3](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/11.3/what-is-mariadb-113.md).
The preview is available as a container **quay.io/mariadb-foundation/mariadb-devel:11.3-preview**.

## Connection Redirection
* Added a [redirect mechanism](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/connection-redirection-mechanism-in-the-mariadb-clientserver-protocol.md) using the [redirect\_url](/docs/server/server-management/variables-and-modes/server-system-variables.md#redirect_url) system variable ([MDEV-15935](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-15935))
* At the moment client-side support is missing
## InnoDB
* Shrink [temporary tablespaces](/docs/server/server-usage/storage-engines/innodb/innodb-tablespaces/innodb-temporary-tablespaces.md) without restart by setting the [innodb\_truncate\_temporary\_tablespace\_now](/docs/server/server-usage/storage-engines/innodb/innodb-system-variables.md#innodb_truncate_temporary_tablespace_now) system variable. ([MDEV-28699](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-28699))
## Replication
* Add keywords "SQL\_BEFORE\_GTIDS" and "SQL\_AFTER\_GTIDS" for [START SLAVE UNTIL](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/standard-replication/gtid/gtid-syntax.md#sql_before_gtids-or-sql_after_gtids) ([MDEV-27247](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-27247)).\
SQL\_BEFORE\_GTIDS stops the replica when it sees gtids of the option's argument list, without executing them.
## SSL/TLS
* Note that this feature did not make it into [MariaDB 11.3](/docs/release-notes/community-server/old-releases/11.3/what-is-mariadb-113.md), but is in [MariaDB 11.4](/docs/release-notes/community-server/11.4/what-is-mariadb-114.md).
* [SSL](/docs/server/security/encryption/data-in-transit-encryption.md) is now enabled in the server by default. No configuration necessary, if no server certificate was provided a self-signed certificate will be automatically generated by the server. See [Mission Impossible: Zero-Configuration SSL](https://mariadb.org/mission-impossible-zero-configuration-ssl/) on mariadb.org ([MDEV-31856](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31856)).
* Clients now can validate self-signed server certificates if the [mysql\_native\_password](/docs/server/reference/plugins/authentication-plugins/authentication-plugin-mysql_native_password.md) or [ed25519](/docs/server/reference/plugins/authentication-plugins/authentication-plugin-ed25519.md) authentication is used and account password is not empty ([MDEV-31855](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31855)).
* Clients now require SSL and have [--ssl-verify-server-cert](/docs/server/clients-and-utilities/mariadb-client/mariadb-command-line-client.md#ssl-verify-server-cert) enabled by default ([MDEV-31857](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31857)).
* Replication clients do that too, [MASTER\_SSL\_VERIFY\_SERVER\_CERT](/docs/server/reference/sql-statements/administrative-sql-statements/replication-statements/change-master-to.md#master_ssl_verify_server_cert) is enabled by default.
* Use `--disable-ssl` or `--disable-ssl-verify-server-cert` to revert to the old behavior.
* Clients can use new command line options [--tls-fp](/docs/server/clients-and-utilities/mariadb-client/mariadb-command-line-client.md#ssl-fp-name) and [--tls-fplist](/docs/server/clients-and-utilities/mariadb-client/mariadb-command-line-client.md#ssl-fplist-name) to verify the server certificate by its fingerprint
## Data Types
* [INET4](/docs/server/reference/data-types/string-data-types/inet4.md) data types can now be cast into [INET6](/docs/server/reference/data-types/string-data-types/inet6.md) types ([MDEV-31626](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31626))
* This means, INET4 values can be compared with INET6 values and can be inserted into INET6 columns, the server can automatically convert INET4 value into INET6 as needed.
## Functions
* Values generated by the Key Derivation Function [KDF](/docs/server/reference/sql-functions/secondary-functions/encryption-hashing-and-compression-functions/kdf.md) are resistant against password hashing generators, so are good for strongly hashed passwords ([MDEV-31474](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31474)).
### Date and Time
* [DATE\_FORMAT](/docs/server/reference/sql-functions/date-time-functions/date_format.md) function can now print the current time zone abbreviation and current time zone offset from UTC with `%Z` and `%z` format specifiers. ([MDEV-31684](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31684))
## Optimizer
* Queries like [UCASE(varchar\_col)=...](/docs/server/reference/sql-functions/string-functions/upper.md) can now use an index on `varchar_col` if its collation is case insensitive. An [optimizer\_switch](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/optimization-and-tuning/query-optimizations/optimizer-switch.md) option, [sargable\_casefold=ON](/docs/server/ha-and-performance/optimization-and-tuning/query-optimizations/sargable-upper.md), has been added to enable this optimization. ([MDEV-31496](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31496))
## Privileges
* Add a new database-level [privilege](/docs/server/reference/sql-statements/account-management-sql-statements/grant.md), `SHOW CREATE ROUTINE` that allows to see the routine definition even if the user isn't the routine owner ([MDEV-29167](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-29167))
## Processlist
* Added a `SENT_ROWS` column to the [Information Schema PROCESSLIST](/docs/server/reference/system-tables/information-schema/information-schema-tables/information-schema-processlist-table.md) table, as well as extended the display size for the columns in processlist to ensure that most results will fit in display ([MDEV-3953](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-3953))

## mariadb-backup
* [mariadb-backup --innobackupex](https://mariadb.com/docs/server/server-usage/backup-and-restore/mariadb-backup/mariadb-backup-options#innobackupex) mode has been deprecated ([MDEV-31505](https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31505))
## Spider
* The [Spider](/docs/server/server-usage/storage-engines/spider.md) storage engine now supports table options instead of having to encode them in COMMENT/CONNECTION strings. When any table option is specified, Spider will ignore COMMENT/CONNECTION strings at the same table/partition/subpartition. A new variable [spider\_ignore\_comments](/docs/server/server-usage/storage-engines/spider/spider-system-variables.md#spider_ignore_comments) is introduced to ignore them globally at all levels (table/partition/subpartition). Another variable, [spider\_suppress\_comment\_ignored\_warning](/docs/server/server-usage/storage-engines/spider/spider-system-variables.md#spider_suppress_comment_ignored_warning), is introduced to suppress warnings when Spider ignores COMMENT/CONNECTION strings.
