MariaDB Corporation, MariaDB Foundation で開発されている MariaDB 製品のほとんどは GPL v2.0 もしくは LGPL 2.1でライセンスされていますが，一部の MariaDB Corporation 製品は MariaDB Corporation によって提唱されている BSL(Business Source License) でライセンスされています。
英語のライセンス条項では理解しにくい箇所もありますので，今回の記事で解説を行いたいと思います。

 

BSLとは

BSLとは時限つきのGPLで，例えば MariaDB MaxScale 2.3 の場合，ライセンス条項は下記URLで確認いただけます。

Parameters 項に着目しますと，以下のように記載されています。

License text copyright (c) 2017 MariaDB Corporation Ab, All Rights Reserved.
“Business Source License” is a trademark of MariaDB Corporation Ab.

Licensor:             MariaDB Corporation Ab
Licensed Work:        MariaDB MaxScale (TM) v.2.3.
                      The Licensed Work is (c) 2017 MariaDB Corporation Ab
Additional Use Grant: You may use the Licensed Work when your application
                      uses the Licensed Work with a total of less than three
                      server instances for any purpose.

Change Date:          2022-01-01

まとめますと，

  • MariaDB Server, MariaDB ColumnStore インスタンス数が3未満の場合はいかなる目的にも利用可能
  • MaxScale 2.3 のライセンスは 2022年1月1日に GPL v2 に移行

ここで，サーバ数(three servers)ではなく，インスタンス数(three server instances)で記載されているのは，仮想マシンやコンテナとして運用する場合，1台のサーバ上で複数 mysqld プロセスを運用される場合もあるためです。

例えば以下のような最小構成は production 環境でも無料で利用可能で，MaxScale サブスクリプションを購入頂く必要はありません。

  • MaxScale 1インスタンス
  • MariaDB Server Primary 1インスタンス
  • MariaDB Server Replica 1インスタンス

また，テスト/ステージング環境において特にインスタンス数制限はありません。

 

BSL 1.1 でライセンスされているMariaDB製品

基本的に MaxScale, MariaDB ColumnStore Tools(Backup & Restore)は MariaDB Platform X3/X4 サブスクリプションに含まれておりますので，サブスクリプションをご購入されていれば，MaxScale や ColumnStore Tools を別途追加購入頂く必要はありません。
