Thank you so much for pointing me to the alter table statement! Unfortunately before I got your message I had already started the process of doing a complete uninstall/reinstall, and the reinstall installed 10.10 instead of 10.9. After getting the permissions sorted on the reinstall I no longer had the last_update issue, so I wasn't able to test your proposed solution, which might have saved me a bunch of time. Hopefully this might help out someone else in the same situation though.
