HELSINKI AND LONDON, 25th September 2012 – SkySQL, the trusted provider of open source database solutions, has announced the first ever graphical interface for easily deploying and managing a cluster of highly available open source databases in the Cloud. SkySQL™ Cloud Data Suite, beta release, has been designed by the team with the largest concentration of original MySQL® experience.
Following recent funding, the Helsinki-based company has invested in developing the SkySQL™ Cloud Data Suite, which it has made available for free as a web service. SkySQL™ Cloud Data Suite uses a new configurator based on MariaDB® to deploy 100% compatible MySQL databases rapidly in the cloud so they can be scaled up & down on demand as the business requires. Features include cross-region replication that provides High Availability as well as online server backups & restore. All features of the tool have been optimised with a view to the security of user data.
SkySQL began life in 2010 as a services and support company for MySQL and MariaDB database users. With this announcement, SkySQL adds cloud capabilities to its SkySQL™ Data Suite. In the coming weeks, SkySQL will be announcing the GA release of the SkySQL™ Cloud Data Suite as well as further releases that will enable enterprises to fully leverage the capabilities of cloud architectures and step-wise increase performance of their databases.
Patrik Sallner, SkySQL CEO, said. “Few startups build a service business and customer base before developing their own products – exceptions include Red Hat and now SkySQL. In two years, we have built a base of over 300 enterprise customers thanks to our wealth of experience. Now SkySQL™ Cloud Data Suite leverages the insights gained from serving these customers in order to provide cloud solutions of practical value to enterprises. This is the key to our mission for SkySQL: to become the leading provider of solutions for MySQL & MariaDB users to manage their databases and data effectively in the enterprise and the cloud.”
Features & benefits
With SkySQL™ Cloud Data Suite, beta release, users can configure their clusters of MySQL nodes to be deployed in Amazon EC2 with four simple clicks, or they can use a more advanced configuration to take full control of the deployed systems. The cluster can be automatically deployed in the Amazon EC2 account of the user, securely and without further interaction. Once deployed, the users can benefit from a fully functional and secure cluster of MariaDB instances, fully compatible with the MySQL database and configured to provide high availability and high performance.
Database administrators can use a graphical console to execute administrative tasks such as backup, restore, node isolation and re-configuration of the deployed nodes. The elasticity of the system is guaranteed by special features available from the same console. For example, one or more nodes can be scheduled to go offline for some hours and come back online during peak times. In case of failure, the integrated master high availability tool guarantees automatic failover and data synchronisation from one master node to one of the available slave nodes. Node fallback is also a simple operation that can be activated with a single click from the administration console. The graphical interface is simple enough for system administrators with limited DBA experience to effectively manage a cluster of cloud database instances.
