London – 5 December 2012 – SkySQL, the trusted provider of open source database solutions, has announced an update of its cloud data suite as well as a new development release, the SkySQL™ Administration Console. In addition, SkySQL CEO Patrik Sallner has pledged his support for the newly created MariaDB Foundation, which aims to safeguard the interests of the MariaDB community and by extension, the MySQL database community.
Update release: SkySQL™ Cloud Data Suite
SkySQL™ Cloud Data Suite is the first ever graphical interface for easily managing a cluster of open source databases in the cloud. It is a collection of software components that provides a highly available database solution in a cloud environment based on MariaDB and is 100% compatible with the MySQL database.
With this latest update release, SkySQL upgrades its administration console with installation on Linux OS, administration and monitoring of replicated and standalone servers, customisable graphs as well as customisable commands. These enables database administrators to oversee the whole operating landscape of his/her database deployments in a cloud environment.
Development release: on-premise administration console for MySQL database deployments
The SkySQL™ Administration Console is effectively a standalone administration console with a monitoring server that can be used with existing MySQL and/or MariaDB installations. This initial release is aimed at existing MySQL database users that want to connect the admin console to MySQL servers they have already installed. It is free-to-use open source technology, which can be downloaded here.
SkySQL’s innovative streak shows as these latest releases follow last week’s roll out of C and Java connectors for MySQL and MariaDB databases.
Founding member of the MariaDB Foundation
To round things up, SkySQL has also announced its support for the MariaDB Foundation, which to date has received pledges for funding worth € 1 million. The Foundation exists to improve database technology, including standards implementation, interoperability with other databases, and building bridges to other types of database such as transactional and NoSQL.
The MariaDB Foundation is a non-stock corporation that has applied for the US 501(c)(3) status, with so far 8 founders and 2 sponsors having pledged support. In February 2013 the founders will appoint board members and confirm the bylaws.
Monty Widenius is looking forward to an autonomous MariaDB Foundation. “Tens of millions of users rely on MariaDB and MySQL and they have more to thank than just all the excellent developers and persons helping to package and distribute MariaDB and MySQL. MariaDB exists thanks to the strength of the GPL and the efforts of the organizations who defend it such as our friends at the Software Freedom Conservancy and the Free Software Foundation Europe. The MariaDB Foundation will provide leadership on technical, legal, and policy matters of interest to all the community.”
“The MariaDB Foundation has the potential to become a new beacon for the MySQL ecosystem. SkySQL is pleased to support the Foundation, which can show leadership and continued evolution of the most widely used Open Source database.” said Patrik Sallner, CEO of SkySQL.
