The Challenge

In the telecommunications sector, database performance is directly tied to network viability and subscriber satisfaction. Telecom products require absolute resilience, massive scalability, and sub-15 millisecond response times to prevent dropped calls, network latching failures, and billing transaction degradation.

To meet these strict SLAs, telecom software company Tayana previously relied on a fragmented, highly complex database footprint split across three separate legacy layers:

  1. An in-memory data store dedicated to the sub-millisecond session layer.
  2. A traditional relational database (RDBMS) for persistent, transactional data.
  3. A separate analytics platform for reporting and processing high-volume call detail records (CDRs).

Managing this architecture was incredibly inefficient. Being a product development company, it forced the company to maintain three distinct developer skill sets, manage three separate deployments, and keep track of three independent vendor support contracts and licensing renewals. Tayana needed a unified data architecture capable of supporting its expanding subscriber base across the EMEA, Asia Pacific, and Americas regions without sacrificing microsecond-level performance.

The Solution: Driving Efficiency Through an All-in-One Data Ecosystem

Following a rigorous evaluation, Tayana chose to consolidate its entire environment using the MariaDB Enterprise. Rather than treating MariaDB as a simple point-solution or basic MySQL replacement, Tayana utilizes it as an all-in-one ecosystem capable of handling in-memory storage, relational transactions, and massively parallel processing (MPP) analytics simultaneously.

Tayana deployed architecture powered entirely by MariaDB:

  • MariaDB InnoDB storage engine securely processes and persists transactional subscriber account balances and session states with absolute ACID compliance.
  • MariaDB ColumnStore handles high-throughput reporting and complex, real-time queries across millions of CDR logs without locking or interfering with the operational database.

This strategic consolidation has eliminated database friction, cut vendor overhead by two-thirds, and paved the way for advanced real-time AI tools—such as multilingual translation chatbots and automated call coaching sentiment analytics.

Upon migrating its core, Tayana PCC (Policy and Charging Control), which is an integrated solution of Online Charging System (OCS) and Policy Manager (PCRF/PCF) designed as per 3GPP standards to MariaDB. Tayana’s initial baseline performance of 2,000 Transactions Per Second (TPS) quickly moved to 3,000 TPS with initial optimization. Following close, on-site tuning collaboration with the specialized MariaDB India engineering team, the exact same platform reached 8,500 TPS while supporting 2 million active subscribers.

Architectural Blueprint for Tier-One Scale

With its unified MariaDB engine stack securely in place, Tayana has established a direct technical roadmap to scale its infrastructure to support 50 million subscribers. By eliminating cross-database synchronization bottlenecks, the upcoming production tier is actively benchmarked to achieve an extraordinary 40,000 to 50,000 TPS.

Radical Operational Simplification

By replacing three separate data engines with a single, highly integrated MariaDB deployment ecosystem, Tayana has replaced administrative complexity with operational agility. Looking Ahead: Scaling to support 50 Million Subscribers 

As part of its next growth phase, the company aims to scale its infrastructure to support 50 million subscribers. The future-state architecture will rely on a robust three-tier data stack. Tayana plans to use GridGain for its in-memory session store, leveraging its native ANSI SQL support to eliminate the need for application query rewrites, while MariaDB Enterprise Server manages persistent transactional data. For complex analytics and CDR queries, MariaDB ColumnStore handles the heavy lifting. With this optimized stack, the platform is projected to effortlessly process 40,000 to 50,000 concurrent transactions per second.
