MariaDB Cloud
01 Introduction
MariaDB Cloud stands out as the ultimate serverless or provisioned cloud database for MariaDB workloads. With MariaDB Cloud, you gain access to the only cloud-based remote DBA service dedicated to MariaDB. It also offers the choice of two robust architectures: provisioned for consistent performance and serverless for on-demand elastic scalability. MariaDB Cloud is available on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, and utilizes MariaDB Enterprise Server, version 11.8.
MariaDB Cloud combines an advanced, self-healing architecture with intelligent, automated failover, enabling zero-downtime recovery, to protect your database. The MariaDB Cloud DBA team delivers enterprise-grade DBAs, available 24×7, to work virtually with your team to perform all database operations.
02 MariaDB Cloud Deployment Options
MariaDB Cloud is available as a serverless option for spiky workloads or as a provisioned service for dependable performance. The serverless choice automatically scales as needed to meet changing requirements, while the provisioned service delivers reliable and consistent behavior.

MariaDB Cloud Provisioned Service
The provisioned option provides a fully managed DBaaS designed for businesses needing control over resources and configurations. Consistent performance is delivered through the stability of dedicated resources, ideal for production workloads that require predictable, always-on performance. The ability to control resource allocation via the UI, APIs or autonomous scheduling makes the provisioned option suitable for workloads with predictable daily, weekly or seasonal patterns, ensuring readiness and efficiency.
MariaDB Cloud Serverless Service
The serverless option dynamically adjusts to workload demands, scaling from zero (at no additional charge) to peak capacity within milliseconds. There is no need to overprovision or guess at capacity. Billing automatically aligns with actual usage, making it ideal for flexible budgets and cost-conscious teams. You can immediately start building cloud-native and AI-driven applications without overspending. The free tier is perfect for development and testing environments, as it provides access to the power of serverless databases without incurring any costs.
03 The MariaDB Cloud Portal
All creation, administration and oversight of your cloud instance(s) is handled through the MariaDB Cloud Portal. In addition to setting up your cloud instance, the portal provides:
- Dashboard: to view a list of your MariaDB Cloud services and status information for each service
- Alerts: to see what issues, if any, have occurred within your environment
- Logs: to view error logs, enterprise audit logs, slow query logs and MaxScale logs
- AI Agents: to set up and use the AI Agents available to MariaDB Server or to create user-created agents
- Backups: to initiate or schedule backups and to start a restore from a previous backup. This option is not available when using the Free tier.
- Settings: to view and alter various configuration settings and manage user access
- API Access: to set up and alter options for multi-factor authentication, notification preferences and API keys
04 AI Agents
Powerful AI agents empower applications to interact with data directly through natural language. Through the no-code agent builder UI, domain experts can create semi-autonomous database agents that leverage metadata and human-in-the-loop validation to provide accurate semantic understanding of databases. Agents use semantic understanding via an integrated vector database and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) methodology to analyze database schemas, relationships, and context. By integrating the agent workflow components, orchestration frameworks, and vector database within the DBaaS platform, MariaDB Cloud reduces security risks by not moving sensitive data to external tools and LLMs.
05 High Performance
MariaDB Cloud is designed for speed and scalability, with the high throughput and elastic scalability needed to power demanding services.
High throughput and low latency deliver a consistent experience for both transactional and analytical workloads.
Elastic scalability ensures that you can add read replicas or scale up compute to handle growth without needing to re-architect your application.
Real-time monitoring, customizable dashboards and intelligent alerts help you proactively manage and optimize performance.
Real-time monitoring of your cloud instances is included with MariaDB Cloud. In a single dashboard, you can track database performance, health, and usage across zones, regions and cloud providers with real-time metrics, logs and automated alerts. Or, you can effortlessly connect with tools like OpenMetrics, Prometheus, Datadog, and New Relic to monitor performance in your preferred environment. The dashboard appears as shown below.

06 Enabled for Next Gen AI
MariaDB Cloud streamlines the development of AI applications by integrating high-performance vector search and developer tooling directly into the database. This unified approach eliminates the complexity and cost of a fragmented data stack.
- Accelerate AI development with embedded agentic AI, including Developer and DBA Copilot agents, to handle tasks from creating natural language interfaces to optimizing performance. This boosts productivity for your entire technical team and accelerates development cycles.
- Unify tooling with MariaDB Cloud MCP Server, which lets AI agents manage instances, execute SQL queries and automate key administrative tasks from a single interface.
- Simplify your data stack by managing vector embeddings alongside your operational data in a single, native system, eliminating the cost, complexity, and latency of a separate vector database.
DBA Copilot is a specialized agent that helps DBAs with system information, tuning, and diagnostics. When a user asks a question, it breaks the query down into discrete steps, each of which is typically translated into a SQL statement targeting system tables, such as those in information_schema or performance_schema. These steps are executed to fetch relevant data and provide actionable insights, making it easier for DBAs to monitor and optimize database performance. Examples of such questions include:

07 Enterprise-grade Functionality
MariaDB Cloud is designed to ensure uptime and resilience. It combines an advanced, self-healing architecture with intelligent, automated failover to provide zero-downtime recovery.
While hardware failures are a possibility, a more common scenario involves a database crash due to resource exhaustion or timeouts, such as running out of allocated temp space due to rogue queries or an unplanned spike in data load. In such instances, it is crucial for application connections to smoothly transition to an alternate server. MariaDB Cloud provides true high availability within a single cloud region. This is accomplished by having servers in different zones within the same region, as shown below.
- High availability is ensured through the use of MariaDB MaxScale, an advanced database proxy. MaxScale automatically handles read-write splitting and read scaling across all active nodes, ensuring your application remains performant and resilient.
- Disaster recovery options available across different zones ensure your service can survive a large-scale event, including the failure of an entire cloud provider zone.
- Self-healing architecture in MariaDB Cloud enables it to automatically detect and recover from many types of failures, such as restarting failed processes or re-provisioning unhealthy nodes.
